How Physiognomy Can Help You Make a Killer First Impression on a Job Interview

For those of you who are hearing the term Physiognomy for the first time, let me introduce you to one of the most fascinating topics I have ever studied. A quick definition of physiognomy is that the map of your life is written on your face, but it goes much deeper than that and is actually an ancient practice.
“…the belief that one can determine a person’s character, moral disposition, or behavior by observing his or her physical characteristics is ancient. Pythagoras, a philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who lived during the period around 500 BCE, may have been one of the first to advocate this practice, known as physiognomy. The term physiognomy comes from the Greek words physis, meaning “nature,” and gnomon, meaning “to judge or to interpret.” http://criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com
So, now we know that physiognomy has been studied for centuries, has been applied before, and was used by Pythagoras. But how can this “pseudo-science” land you a job or at least smooth over the interview process? When under the Headhunter/HR microscope, knowing how people intake, process, and express information is the key. And you don’t have a second chance to make a killer first impression. What if I told you that there is a way to approach the person who will interview you and make sure that every word coming out of your mouth makes the correct impact? Not convinced yet? UNDERSTANDING A PERSON THROUGH THEIR EYEBROWS
We’re going to keep this simple so that you don’t spend all of your social interaction staring at the person in front of you–and most importantly–you are not getting distracted by trying to read eyebrows when you should be concentrating on the interview instead.
Let’s start with the shapes. There are three types of eyebrows: curved, straight, and angled or pointed. Any feature on the face that is round indicates people-orientation. Angled, pointed, or straight features indicate a distancing from emotions. Features have the same meanings for both men and women. Let’s start:
1) People with Curved Eyebrows (smooth curve):
• Oriented toward people and personal connection
• Can easily relate on a personal level
• Learn through experience and example
How to communicate to them:
Make sure to make a mind-blowing first impression on this person. This type is mentally focused on people and personal connection. Therefore, research the company, the people, and the position you are applying for. Then, give a compliment, but be sure it is authentic, honest, and heartfelt. Don’t over-do it. This type is visual and identifies with real-world applications. If references are requested, inform the references to stick to what they are asked, and also inform them about the company, the position you applied for, and your specific accomplishments from the past.
2) People with Straight Eyebrows (no curve or angle):
• Logical approach
• Need facts and data
How to communicate to them:
Just as with the shape of their eyebrows, these types value straightforward and factual answers. Present a bullet-point list of your accomplishments and focus on quantifiable results. Don’t exaggerate or take too long to get to the point. In terms of how to frame your past achievements, present yourself as being a part of the solution; never a part of the problem. And explain how you fixed a situation in a few well-chosen words. Ultimately, with this type, you should always present yourself as a fixer of problems.
3) People with Angled or Pointed Eyebrows (definite up and down):
• Being mentally in control is priority
• Need to be right
• Carefully evaluate
How to communicate to them:
This type is the boss–the owner of the circus–and they like to show it. Their focus is on being mentally in control at all times. Learn to follow, and let them lead. Do not present yourself as a competitor; rather, you are their guest and not someone who wants to run things. Make them feel that is it very easy to be around you, even if you want to run for your life. Going with the flow will pay off for you in the end. Remember, as Maya Angelou said, “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Therefore, smile and look like a person who can be managed. You can abandon the need to feel in charge for the moment—during the interview—and then once you get the job, you will finally be able to let your guard down.
Other eyebrow characteristics to consider when assessing people are the distance between the eyes/eyelids and the eyebrows, as well as the actual thickness or sparseness of the eyebrows. Below is a short bullet-point list of these factors, as we will explore them more fully in a future article.
People with High Eyebrows (large space between eye and eyebrow):
• Selective and discriminating in all aspects of their life
• Prefer a “wait and see” approach
People with Low Eyebrows (no space between eye and eyebrow):
• Mentally quick
• Want to do things now
• Tend to interrupt because of the above reasons (don’t take it personally)
People with Bushy Eyebrows (thick & full)
• Constantly thinking
• Intellectually powerful
People with Thin Eyebrows (like a pencil line):
• Have single-minded approach
• Overly concerned with others’ opinions of themselves
